Estimation of Roundabout Capacity Using Intersection Perspective

Description:

Current HCM capacity is based on approach assessment. Entries are treated as independent T-junctions. However, there is lots of traffic interaction at roundabouts and often a mix of modes also influencing entry decisions. Interference of traffic in the roundabout impacts capacity. Pedestrian and cyclist activity impacts capacity. Approach-based (gap acceptance) assessments may not be providing enough information to accurately predict roundabout capacity.

Objective:

Provide comprehensive capacity extimation and LOS calculation (average delay) for roundabouts taking into account interference effects..

Benefits:

Improved capacity estimations.
